The alarming discovery was reported to the police just before 6 PM on Thursday evening, prompting an immediate response and subsequent area cordoning by the authorities. Divers from the rescue services were deployed to the scene.
Magnus Lefèvre, the duty officer at the police station, confirmed the recovery of two bodies. Initially treated as a potential homicide, the police are now considering various scenarios after initiating a comprehensive investigation. “Until we are certain about what happened, we can't rule out any possibilities,” stated Lefèvre.
Currently, there are no suspects, and the cause behind the vehicle's plunge into the water remains a mystery. Lefèvre emphasized that several investigative measures, including reviewing film footage and conducting technical examinations, are underway to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
Katarina Rusin, a police spokesperson, announced plans for a forensic examination of the victims to determine the cause of death. Asked whether there were indications of murder, Rusin explained, "We are investigating whether this incident was an accident. The initial classification as a homicide is a standard procedure in such cases of death to facilitate thorough investigation."
As of 9:40 AM, the police revised the case classification to 'causing another's death' as current evidence does not suggest a homicide. “This change is part of our preliminary investigation, and we have been open from the beginning that such a reclassification could occur,” stated Patric Fors, another police spokesperson.
The investigation is ongoing, with no further details currently available from the police. However, TV4 News reports that after analyzing surveillance footage, police suspect reckless driving could be the cause of this fatal accident.
